Racing Books: The Art of Race Driving

I've finally gotten around to ordering "Going Faster! Mastering the Art of Race Driving". It has been the go to for beginning racers, while still having plenty to offer experts. I'm sure it isn't the most hardcore, specific racing guide, but to get started on learning finer points of everything, I've heard this is the book.

Anyone have any other books they've read that have been helpful in going faster?

I'm also excited to get my hands on it so I can help others out, whether walking them through sections of the book or simply recommending it.

Thanks a ton Noel. The alien's secrets has been revealed. This will be great. I'll be reading this along with my new book and I'll be faster than you in no time.

I have read most of Going Faster.

I don't know how more technical you could possibly get. They explain everything from tire friction to in depth explanation of telemetry, how to read it and how to use it to adjust your driving.

So far it is very interesting. I plan to maybe post some articles of it on here or something of the like. Maybe when certain things crop up, use what the book says and kinda create something on the forums to help.

Would be nice if you manage to find something we can all use in iRacing for example.
First line: "At first glance racing looks like mayhem..."

There's our problem. We make it actual mayhem, instead of simply making it look like mayhem.

In honesty though, I'm finding the first few sections very helpful for diagnosing typical errors. For example, knowing when you've turned in too early, identifying it sooner rather than later and correcting.

I've read most of the book, I really should get around to finishing it. There is also a 90 minute skip barber video on YT that is super helpful as well.

Do any of you guys use or track telemetry?

I've watched the toy tube video, it's cheesy and great at the same time.

I've used that free itelemetry, whatever it's called. But not often. I'm still at a stage where squeezing that extra time out of my lap is not the most beneficial. Better to learn to handle the car perfectly first.

Telemetry isn't something I'm up to yet. My focus is simply getting around the track competitively while keeping the car under control, ALWAYS. Since I'm still at a stage where the car gets away from me sometimes in an unrecoverable manner I just don't feel I'm ready to complicate matters with telemetry.

My focus for now is continue to work on squeezing out those precious tenths and regain the consistency I started iRacing with. Once I get there I'll learn the ins and outs of how to setup a car for me rather than tweak a car setup for someone else.

Then comes telemetry.

That totally makes sense with the cars you guys drive. Something like the Skippy or SRF control isn't a huge issue, but with the slower cars it seems like the smaller tweaks to driving can have a huge impact to lap-times. Being able to compare laps in those cars is awesome.

Yeah. When you get to very repeatable lap times and can't seem to imprint.... Then I'd use it.

I'm going to try and post a sort of summary or something of the chapter I'm on now regarding using telemetry. Starting around pg 130. Very relevant. When I get home I'll put it up
