Why is it awful for gaming? And too true tm but it's the future... and it's nearly here.
While everything looks beautiful in 4k. The input lag of current 4k panels is huge. I think this one measured in at 50+ ms. I was prompted to look when I couldn't hit anything in shooters due to it. It's a Samsung U28D590D and I managed to get a pretty decent deal on it at the time.

Ah right. The 4k version of Kit's one is rated at 60Hz with 8ms so not too bad. I can see how 50ms would be an issue. Hmm. Decisions decisions.

This thread has me conflicted. I don't know if I should be picking on Kitlope and his (lack) of gaming prowess, complaining about the price of that monitor, or just generally grumble about being a cheap old bastard.

I am pretty sure neither HDMI nor display port can push 120Hz at 4K, so the problem is the connection.

And Kitty, nice buy. I would wager the G-Sync has more to do with the smoothness than you think because you don't notice fluctuations in the framerate.

I think that's been my issue for the last couple years, input lag. I was using adaptive v-snyc in the NVidia control panel with the BenQ 120 Hz lightboost monitor and now in hindsight I can say I had a good touch of input lag. My pwnage skillZ suffered greatly.

Kitty I wish you'd be honest ffs just once in your life.

If there's any input lag it's because of your delayed reactions given you're hammered half the time. :icon_rolleyes:

Wrong pizano. I'm pwning. Even after some beers. Even after some happy smoke. Even sometimes getting 1st place on a 48 player server.

Yup. The old, twentysomething Kitty is back.

I've not got any downtime from work until next week and I need to be there when it gets delivered obviously so I'll be ordering it for delivery next Wednesday. I decided to go for the PG279Q (IPS) in the end rather than the PG278Q (TN) or the PG27AQ (4K). I'll upgrade the monitor again when I build a system to hit 144Hz in 4K in a couple of years time when the display port/panel tech has caught up. 4K 60Hz isn't worth it to me. So the smart money goes on the 165Hz 1440p IPS panel for now. I'm sure i'll notice a big difference from 1080p 60Hz...

Looking forward to it's arrival!

I'm also going to pick up a Corsair Strafe RGB MX Silent and Corsair M65 Black mechanical keyboard and laser mouse combo with a ROG mousemat too to compliment the monitor. I'll be upgrading from a Zalman ZM-K400G gaming keyboard and Roccat Kova+ mouse so again they should be a decent upgrade.

That'll be me done for a couple of years then, I still haven't overclocked this CPU yet and the 980Ti has got plenty of life in it with plenty of room for overclocking should I need to.

I'll keep the monitor, keyboard and mouse in storage and when I build the 4K beast in a couple of years they can come back out and go with this existing PC and monitor as a second gaming/media dual screen PC.

That's the plan anyway :)

You went with the PG279Q?

I looked into both and I'm not sure what to think of it so you'll have to post your thoughts. I still really want to get the PG278Q and might pull the trigger if my tax return is as good as I hope.

I'll be sure to leave feedback once I've used it for a couple of days, no problem.

The PG279Q in a word? Unbelievable. :icon_eek:

Only negative is glow in the corners, which is the same for every IPS panel. I don't notice it unless the entire screen is black and it's in a pitch black room which rarely ever (if at all) happens.

As for positives? Too many to mention.

It is just unbelievable the difference between this - 165Hz, G-Sync 1440p IPS panel vs a 60Hz, 1080p TN.

I really do struggle to explain how it is so good, you can't appreciate it by watching videos etc. you just have to see it for yourself.

It's like hot butter in a pan smooth with no stuttering or tearing. No lag. Amazing colours that pop out of the screen that get even better when the panel is calibrated. It's such a hard thing to describe the difference but it is well worth the money.

The first thing I tried was Team Fortress 2, as it was recommended due to being likely to hit 165fps minimum to take advantage of the 165Hz refresh rate. I needn't have worried, @1440p with every option maxed out it was hovering around the 285fps mark... so with the 165Hz refresh rate it was eerily smooth. The only way I can describe it is you think where you want to aim and without even realizing it you are on the target and hitting it with complete accuracy.

I tried the monitor with my old mouse and keyboard first as I wanted to see the difference just the monitor made, which was massive. The new keyboard and mouse has definitely added to it now and really compliment the monitor and what it can do.

If you are in any doubt about the monitor, don't be. It really is that good.

I told you so Little P when you joined ts and asked me a few questions about the monitor.

Enjoy the pwnage while you can, one day most everybody will be using one of these.
